We had a regular meeting on Jan 22ND.
In business portion an induction ceremony for Ms. Hasegawa was held. she used to be a member and a president of this club. Welcome back TM Hasagawa!

Vice President Education TM Fukuda called on members to respond to the survey which she put up on Jan 10th.

Dear all

We have a regular meeting on Jan 8th.

The results of the meeting follow,
The Best Speaker was TM Yayoi Komura.
The Best Evaluator was TM Masaru Horioka.
The Best table topics Speaker was TM Masami Inoue.
The Best Performance Award went to TM Bruce Perkins.

In business portion it was announced that we would have an in-house contest for the 2012 International Contest on Feb 19th.
We plan to have both English and Japanese contest.
If you want to be a contestant, please let President Horioka know by Jan 22nd.

And President Horioka explained about OBUTA aka unnecessary word donation. Please check the detail at the mail rink with his mail titled "Unnecessary word donation" on Jan 8th.

We enjoyed the meeting with Ms. Hashidate, Ms. Hasegawa, Ms. Aomi and Mr. Saito.
Next meeting will be Jan 22nd.

In the business portion, it was announced that the regular meetings were rescheduled to Jan 8 and 22 on January only. The new Competent Leadership Manual is to be purchased at the club for the fellow members who have the old one.

A motion was made but not carried as we didn't have a quorum.
Obuta donation, which was moved and carried at the last meeting, was again raised for discussion. We will discuss this at the Jan 8 meeting.

Dear all

We had a regular meeting on Dec. 4th
In business portion a motion about OBUTA(piggy bank) was carried. We will donate 10yen each time we make an unnecesarry sound(such as AH). The maxium amount will be 100yen with a person.

A regular meeting was held at S.W.U on the Nov. 20th.
In the meeting Mr. Alan Costerisan was accepted to be our new member and the induction celemony was held for him.

Dear all

Japanese and English Area 44Contest was hosted at S.W.U on Oct.16th.
As the result of the English Evaluation Contest, our representative contestants TM Masashi Wada and TM Shigeru Maruyama won in the first place and in the second place respectively.

Both proceeded to Division D English Evaluation Contest on Oct. 30th.
Then again TM Wada was in the first place, and TM Maruyama was in the third place.
TM Wada is going to participate District 76 English Evaluation Contest on Nov. 27 at National Olympic Center in Tokyo.

We had a regular meeting on Oct. 2nd at Sagami Womens' University.

At the business portion the motion that we buy a new banner was carried.

TMoD was TM Masami Inoue.

We had a good time together with 4 guests(Sukigara-san, Alan-san, Maeda-san, Toyama-san).

Dear members

I'm going to update the secretary report writing about the Sep. 18th in-house evaluation contest.
However this time I decided to copy the mail by TM Atsuko Inagaki, who chaired the contest, because it expressed the mood and atmosphere along with the information I would like to bring up.

One thing I would like to add is about TM Bruce Perkins, who is the first place winner in the English contest.
Given the result he has decided to represent yamato Bilingual TMC in Area English Contest, A-Z,TMC in the Japanese Contest.

That means we no longer have Obuta.
Obuta; Piggy bank where a certain member donates 10en when he or she makes some error such as making unnecesary words or letting out ring tone during the meeting.

What new AZTMC officers are doing ?

Hello fellow members,

This is new president, Horioka.

From July we have started new term and I'd like to introduce what officers are working on.

As I introduce in the installation ceremony, my goals on this term are:

- to enhance our educational program

- to improve our leadership program and change our club more organized

Then we are starting several tasks as follows:

- To get our educational program more goal based, we will re-focus on DCP program (leader:VPE Fukuda)

- Updating educational handbook(leader: VPM Y. Inoue)

We have a great educational club handbook. But it contains some obsolete information. Also, we should add more information so that new members can know how we proceed the meeting when their first role assignments. We will make a committee consisting of our club members for this activity.

- Updating/distributing members list (leader: Secretary Senda)

As you may know, currently VPE and TMoD have troubles to get role assignments confirmed.

Then the motion for distributing members list was moved and carried in the July 31 meeting.

The list will contain name, email and phone number so that they use to get it confirmed earlier and to find replacement if some members are not available.

- Updating club bylaw(leader: President Horioka)

We might have had club bylaw in our 40-year history but currently it does not exist. In addition, we have some troubles in the club due to lack of common understanding, for example, when we get reimbursed the expense. So,we will create new club bylaw.

- VPPR task (TBD - leader: TM Posadas)

We will start some activity on PR - plan is still TBD.

Also, we are working on:

- Evaluation contest (in-house and area 44)

We started to nominate contest committee members. We would appreciate support from non-contestant members in advance.

So, all officers are working hard to active the goals and again we would appreciate support from all the members.

TM Horioka led the Table Topics Session, with questions on topics ranging from holidays to patriotism;
Three members gave prepared speeches:

Special speech evaluation session on May 30th, 2010

The Atsugi-Zama Toastmasters club held a special Evalu-a-thon meeting on May 30th, 2010. 15 club members and 3 guests attended the meeting.

In this special "Evalu-a-thon" meeting, five speakers gave speeches:

TM Fukuda: "The Origin of Japanese Culture" (Project #5, Advanced Manual);
TM Takayanagi: "Challenging New Things" (Project #5, Advanced Manual);
TM Ofori: "How Japanese Can Speak English Fluently" (Project #3, Public Relations Manual);
TM Lenglet: "The Ringmaster's Daughter" (Project #5, CC Manual);
TM Horioka: "What is Professional Learning?" (Project #3, CC Manual).

Each speaker was evaluated by six or more evaluators. Shortly after being evaluated, each speaker gave his/her speech a second time, taking into account the remarks of evaluators. Each speech was then evaluated a second time by the same evaluators. This was a very intensive session for both the speakers and the evaluators. All speakers were able to dramatically improve their speeches on the spot, given such a high quality feedback from many evaluators.

We would especially like to thank all our guests for participating as evaluators during this meeting, and for giving great comments to the speakers!

Constructive speech evaluations were given by the General Evaluator (TM Sakuragi) and four Evaluators (resp., TM Komura, TM Maruyama, TM Ofori, and TM M. Inoue).

We held our second speaker coaching session, an extra educational session before the regular meeting to coach some members and help them prepare their speeches;
TM Yoshikawa opened the meeting with the Joke Master Session;
TM Maruyama led the Table Topics Session, asking randomly selected speakers to report news like TV newscasters;
The Toastmaster of the Day, TM Lenglet, experimented with adding a Hot Speech Session to the agenda, where a volunteer is asked to give a 4-to-7-minute unprepared speech on a freely selected topic. TM Komura volunteered, and delivered an amazing impromptu speech titled "Unexpected Things Happen Everyday";
Three members gave prepared speeches:

TM M. Inoue persuaded the audience to try to reach win-win solutions in conflict situation, in his speech titled "Dispute" (Project #3, Public Relations Manual);
TM Y. Inoue's speech, titled "The Best Gift", explained why women have more health-risks than men when drinking (Project #5, CC Manual);
TM Horioka introduced several methods to keep our work, private, and Toastmasters-related responsibilites in balance, in his speech titled "Work-Life-English Balance" (Project #2, CC Manual);

TM Tomoda has officially become a new club member; welcome TM Tomoda!
This time, we experimentally held a speaker coaching session, an extra educational session before the regular meeting to coach some members and help them prepare their speeches. This coaching session was very effective and appreciated by the speakers.
TM Wada opened the meeting with the Joke Master Session;
TM M. Inoue led the Table Topics Session;
Four members gave prepared speeches:

TM Senda delivered a insightful speech about solutions to prevent suicide, titled "Did I sleep?" (Project #7, CC Manual);
TM Tateishi told a story titled "The Best Gift", introducing Paralympics gold medalist Yoshihioro Nitta (Project #4, Storytelling, Advanced Manual);
TM Komura introduced another touching and interesting story tilted "Love Letter" based on her personal experience (Project #6, CC Manual);
TM Asano made a funny speech, titled "Never give up", from his daily life explaining how his speech title was changed and decided (Project #8, CC Manual);

TM Takayanagi gave a speech, titled "Middle-aged women, be ambitious!" (Project #3, The Entertaining Speaker Advanced Manual), about her experience in starting her new job, with lots of humour and an encouraging message for middle-aged women;
TM Perkins introduced the "Courtiard balcony scene from 'Romeo and Juliet'" (Project #4, Interpretive Reading Advanced Manual) with a very emotional voice;
TM Wada gave interesting tips on how to complain while avoiding confrontation, and illustrated those tips with a role play, in his speech "Asserting yourself effectively in a non-confrontational way" (Project #5, Interpersonal Communication Advanced Manual);

TM Hasegawa opened the meeting with American jokes in the Joke Master Session;
TM Senda led the Table Topics Session;
Four members gave prepared speeches:

TM Yoshikawa compared the Amazon Kindle 2 and the forthcoming Apple iPad as book reading devices and as general computing devices, in his speech titled "Reading on Paper or the Web" (Project #7, CC Manual);
TM Sakuragi delivered a very funny and entertaining speech on life in Tokyo, titled "Tokyo, an Unfriendly City" (Project #3, The Entertaining Speaker Advanced Manual);
TM Perkins explained and demonstrated how to handle criticism non-defensively, in his speech titled "Bring on the Criticism" (Project #3, Advanced Manual);
TM Maruyama delivered again his speech titled "Get to Know Them" (Project #3, Advanced Manual), to practice for the forthcoming Area Speech Contest;

Club officers training on Feb. 28th, 2010

The officers of the Atsugi-Zama Toastmasters club had a training workshop on Feb. 28st, 2010, with officers of other clubs in the District 76's Division B.

Training sessions
At the core of this training day were three workshop sessions, which triggered many interesting discussions among officers from different clubs:

Parliamentary Procedure by TM Akira Saito: a hands-on introduction to Henry M. Robert's Robert's Rules of Order, a system of rules for managing large meetings (more than 12 participants) which has been successfully and widely applied, at least in the USA, since the 19th century;
How to Build the Best Club Climate by TM Nicholas Johnson and TM Ruskyle Howser (resp. current and past presidents of the Tokyo Toastmasters Club): a discussion on the different styles of Toastmasters club meetings, and especially on the level of formality ("fun vs. organization") which should be adapted by a club's officers to meet the needs of members;
Mentoring Program by TM Toshi Yada: an introduction to the programs and mentoring material provided at the Minato-Mirai TM club, and a group discussion about the mentoring issues and solutions found in clubs.

TM Lenglet gave a speech, titled "Get Creative: Commit to the Unexpected!" (Project #3, CC Manual), to give tips on how to trigger creativity to solve problems and to get unstuck in creative activities;
TM Y. Inoue delivered a colorful speech, titled "A pink-tinted sunset and shadowed reflect on the Danube" (Project #4, CC Manual), to encourage the audience to travel abroad and discover new cultures;
TM Ofori delivered an impressive motivational speech to advertise Toastmasters, titled "Communication" (Project #1, Public Relations Manual);

Evaluations were given by the General Evaluator (TM Fukuda) and three Evaluators (resp., TM M. Inoue, TM Horioka, and TM Sakuragi).

In-house speech contest on Feb. 7th, 2010

The Atsugi-Zama Toastmasters club held an in-house speech contest, on Feb. 7th, 2010. We had six great experienced speakers participating as contestants! Each speaker delivered a 5-to-7 minutes speech. This contest was qualifying for the Area 23 contest, which in turn will be qualifying for the District 76 (Japan) contest, and then to the international level.

Contestants

TM Sakuragi explained the importance of understanding the context when communicating, in his speech titled "KY";
TM Ofori gave an inspiring speech, titled "If You Don't Try...", on the importance of fostering creativity and initiative in children;
TM Tateishi gave very practical advice to overcome anxiety, in her speech titled "How Do You Cope With It?";
TM Maruyama encouraged the audience to be more sensitive to people's background when communicating, with his speech titled "Get to Know Them!";
TM Takayanagi told the story of her fight against disease, in her speech titled "Disease Can't Beat Me";
TM Hasegawa described recent advances in allergy treatment, in her speech titled "Victory Over Peanut".

Winners

TM Maruyama: Best Speaker;
TM Tateishi: 2nd Best Speaker;
TM Sakuragi: 3rd Best Speaker.

TM Asano (Atsugi-Zama) gave a speech, titled "Coffee" (Project #7, CC Manual), on one of his trips to Germany where he got lost;
TM Mamuro (Kamakura) advertized the charms of the Kamakura region (the Kamakura Alps, etc.) in her speech titled "Kamakura, My Town" (Project #4, Advanced Communication Manual);
